It is known that the company learned about the leak back in January 2020, but it was not until early April that the passengers whose cards were compromised were notified.

“It was a very advanced attack. It took us time to assess its scale and determine who is affected, ”the airline’s press service said, noting that hackers were able to gain access not only to bank card numbers but also to the CVV code, which allows them to perform any operations.

EasyJet said it decided to release information about the hacker attack in order to warn 9 million customers whose email addresses got to the cybercriminals, as in theory they could become victims of phishing.

The airline's security service said that the hackers were trying to gain access to the "intellectual property of the company", not aiming to take over the personal data of customers.

“There is no evidence that any personal information of any nature has been misused, however, following the recommendation of the ICO [UK Information Commissioner's Office], we have contacted approximately nine million of our clients to advise them of safeguards to minimize any risks. related to phishing, ”said EasyJet.

It is known that phishing schemes, when attackers send emails with fake links inside, fraud prevention, after clicking on which the victim can lose their data, have become especially widespread during the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Google, the company blocks about 100 million phishing emails on Gmail every day.
