How can bank fraud be prevented?

Safety Detectives added that in some cases, 'used data' can still, how to access the dark web safely, be used to carry out certain purposes in extracting personal information for criminal purposes.

Safety Detectives said the vulnerability in this database was discovered last month and has notified Socialarks after it was confirmed the Hong Kong-based company owned the server. The server was immediately secured on the same day.

The potential consequences of disclosing this personal information include identity theft and financial fraud committed on other platforms, including online banking.

As many as 214 million personal data from Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn accounts were reportedly leaked on the internet. This big data breach is uncovered by Safety Detective's researchers.

The stolen data includes email addresses, phone numbers, and full names of users, and in some cases, specific location data.

In the Safety Detectives report, it is stated that more than 400 GB of personal data was leaked from Socialarks which was stolen. This is a social media management company from China.

The ElesticSearch database was targeted by online criminals, where more than 318 million records were seized. Safety Detectives said this database was created after user data was 'deleted' from Facebook, antivirus software, Instagram, and Linkedin.

"Various personal information such as first and last names, home and email addresses, as well as cell phone numbers, can be used by criminals to carry out mass attacks" added Safety Detectives.

To avoid data theft, internet users must be more careful, among others, by using anti-virus tools that can ensure sites visited using the HTTPS protocol are secure, creating passwords by combining letters, numbers, symbols, and being aware of incoming e-mails and clicked links.

The good news is that sensitive information such as passwords or financial information has not been revealed in the data breach. But this is a practice of violating the tech giant's terms of service.

"The Socialarks database contains 'used data', including personal information, even though some user data has been used," wrote Safety Detectives, as quoted by Express, Thursday (14/1/2021).

"However, based on our findings, the Socialarks database stores personal data such as the phone numbers and email addresses of Instagram and Linkedin users which users do not share with the public. How Socialarks has access to that data remains unknown."

"Contact information can be used to target victims, among others, to send personalized emails containing the person's personal information so that they believe it, personal data fraud, and lead [victims] to enter deeper into the realm of privacy" explained Safety Detectives.
